Operating on the principle that well-designed equipment can improve your life, Royal Designer for Industry David Mellor was a key figure in British design with an international reputation as designer, manufacturer and shopkeeper. Born in Sheffield and originally trained as a silversmith, he specialised in metalwork and is particularly well known for his cutlery having won numerous design awards in many international museum collections.
The go-to shop for design fans wedding lists, the designer himself is also recognised for redesigning the traffic light system still in use today and for designing stainless steel cutlery for government canteens and NHS hospitals in the midcentury. His first shop was opened in 1969 in Sloane Square, London with more soon to follow. They quickly became internationally renowned helping establish new attitudes to retailing at the time and continue to be a must-visit destination today.
