AuctionetAn extraordinary piece of design history is about to resurface at Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverks autumn auction December 5-8th. A rediscovered "Borgen" chair from the famed 1930 Stockholm Exhibition designed by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet, was part of a living room set showcased at the exhibition pivotal in introducing functionalism to Sweden. Hjorth, who was Nordiska Kompaniet's chief architect, became famous worldwide for his "sportstugemöbler" (sports cabin furniture), particularly made from pine, these pieces have achieved record auction prices in recent years. However, during the 1930s, Hjorth's designs were criticised by some for what they termed "profit-functionalism"—modernist shapes executed in luxurious materials, creating a Scandinavian interpretation of Art Deco. The "Borgen" chair was purchased after the exhibition by Karlstad Stadshotell and placed in the Royal Automobile Club's lounge on the second floor of the hotel. It remained there until the hotel changed ownership in 1984. The chair then spent years tucked away in a drying cabinet in an outhouse in the Värmland forests, until its recent rediscovery by one of the auction house’s appraisers with it's estimate set at around £3,580.
