Niels Gammelgaard at Auctionet

The Modern Shows® team has long admired Niels Gammelgaard's work frequently using his designs in property stagings and owning some of the iconic designs themselves.

They are thrilled that Stockholm’s Auktionsverk is showcasing Gammelgaard’s work on August 26th. A key figure in industrial and Scandinavian design, Gammelgaard is renowned for blending function with elegance.

He gained international recognition in the 1980s through his collaboration with IKEA, notably co-designing the iconic “Moment” chair. His early IKEA pieces have become more important over the years and are highly affordable and desirable.

His designs, characterised by simplicity, utility, and beauty, have had a lasting impact on the design world. The auction highlights his enduring influence and the timeless quality of his work.

Find out more about Gammelgaard and why Auctionet is highlighting this talented designer this month in our latest blog post here.

Auctionet joins the midmod fold

Giving a heartfelt welcome to the newest member of our online directory, The Modern Marketplace. Auctionet is also sponsoring our 2025 shows.

The Auctionet story began back in 2011 when a group of auctioneers, valuers, and tech enthusiasts at a prestigious Swedish auction house recognised traditional auctions were struggling to keep pace with modern, tech-driven demands. The classic auction model, with live bidding and a gavel, was becoming less effective, especially with rising costs for storage, staff, and buildings.

To adapt, Auctionet developed a system where auctions could occur daily, eliminating the need to stockpile items for special events. They overhauled their processes, built a custom transport and logistics system, and focused on improving efficiency, particularly in delivering items to the UK.

Andy Sagar, Managing Director of UK Operations chatted to co-founder of Modern Shows® Lucy Ryder Richardson about what the future holds.
